A2 Film Logo

In developing our company logo I designed something that would look professional and would look good on the title sequence of a film. Although this looked professional the font doesn't really suit the logo and it doesn't relate to our film because the text is too posh so I re- edited the logo with a new font.

This version was a lot better the text was more spaced out and the font isn't too posh. The addition of a small icon above gives the logo a little extra so it would look professional on our short film.

As Audience Profile

Audience Profile

Target Audience?
The target audience for our film is for the age group of young adults of age about 20 which would be the main audience although would also suite a younger audience of mid teens. This is due to the type of horror it is. Due to the film being a paranormal horror the age group cant be too low because it would be unsuitable to younger viewers. The age group cant be to high either because horror is not a genre type of film for an older audience so the main target audience would be young adults.

Rating?

Considered certificate
12A means that anyone aged 12 or over can go and see the film unaccompanied. The A stands for 'accompanied' and 'advisory'. Children younger than 12 may see the film if they are accompanied by an adult who is someone over the age of 18 who must watch the film with them. Films that aren't passed as a 12a are considered to be dark and upsetting to the audience so is pushed to a 15.

The reason behind our groups choice of rating is because the film doesn't contain explicit images or too much violence means it was difficult to prioritise a specific audience because it could be considered a 12a but other horror films are passed as 15. Due to this our overall choice was 15. It mainly contains small horror which may be frightening to the audience but is the aim of the film and not to horrific for a younger audience. The reason anyone younger than 12 can come with an adult is because there is small use of bad language which is only used on a small scene but may be unsuitable for younger than 12.
Also, our film can be considered as 12 a because their isn't much violence but there is use of weapons but not to the extent where it is unsuitable like things such as 'sexual violence' which is only seen in films of 18 .Dangerous behaviour (for example hanging, suicide and self-harming) may be present in 12 or 12A works but will not dwell on detail which could be copied or present those activities as pain or harm free. So will only show small scenes which contain this so that audiences cant pick up on this bad behaviour. Their isn't much use of this in our film but their is scenes of harm to people so can therefore be passed as a 12 rating.

Our chosen Certificate

However, most horror films are given a 15 certificate although they can be considered as 12a because of the psychological horror or upsetting nature of the film

15 certificates work  stronger than 12 or 12A rated works and could include any of the following:
  • strong violence
  • frequent strong language
  • sexual activity
  • strong verbal references to sex
  • sexual nudity
  • drug taking
The age certificate of 15 means there aren't as many restrictions within the film and you are allowed more violent scenes which work well to make a good horror film so because of this we chose 15 to make our horror film suitable for its target audience.
Due to the gore and violence of the deaths in horror films means that the film cant be passed as 12a and are pushed to 15. So our overall choice is because of the death and  blood in some scenes may be unsuitable for younger audiences. An example of other horror films similar to ours would be paranormal activity, insidious, the conjurance and Devil which are all certified as 15 which helped us decide our age because of the depth of research we did into the genre.

As Film Distributor Research

Lionsgate
Researching into horror film distributors, the first company I came across were a mainstream company 'Lionsgate' who have produced a range of horror films and are quite well known. This company has distributed films such as :

1)The last exorcism
2)Cabin in the woods
3)saw
4)possession

Although this is a very good distributor of horror films its aimed at a much wider audience because its main stream, so therefore would be a good choice but due to our paranormal horror film this distribution company is mainly a distributor to gore films.

Hammer Films
Furthermore, another distribution company in which I found is a distributor of British horror films. Hammer films are more of an independent company as they distribute only to the British audience where as company's like Lionsgate distribute nationally. Hammer films have distributed films such as;

1)Woman in Black
2)Let me in
3)Wake Wood
4)Dracula

This company wouldn't really be a good distributor for our film because the film we are creating is a paranormal horror and this company doesn't really distribute paranormal horror apart from one recent one they have done woman in black. So we would want a company which is known for paranormal horror.

Paramount Pictures
Paramount pictures are another common distributor of horror films and have distributed a range of horror films including films such as;

1)paranormal activity
2)The haunting
3)The ring
4)Friday 13th

This would be a suitable distributor of our film because it has released films with a similar sub genre for example paranormal activity and although it is mainstream I believe that our film is suitable for a wider audience and not just aimed at a British audience.

Universal Pictures
Universal pictures is a mainstream company and is one of the biggest in the world due to the success or the distributed films. This company has distributed films such as;

1)insidious
2)Sinister
3)Mama
4)Devil

This would be the main company to distribute our film because they have successfully distributed a range of paranormal horror and also has distributed a similar film to ours which is Devil and this got great reviews. So therefore the distributor we would choose to distribute our film would be universal pictures.

As Film Title Sequence Research

Insidious Title Sequence

In this film the title sequence starts of firstly by introducing the producers and other company's associated with the film. In addition to this then reveals a bedroom with a little boy suggesting the film will be about a little boy. Furthermore, then the sequence includes some intense music with a scary paranormal lady suggesting this is the main theme of the film about a woman who maybe possess a little boy. It also introduces the title before then continuing with still images and other names involved with the film. The title sequence for this film only gives a brief hint to what the film is about just to suggest what the film is about. Also, the title sequence reveals the main characters of the film for example the family in which take part in this haunting.

 The conjuring title sequence

The conjuring's title sequence starts of with pictures on top of a light boards which immediately suggests its about a paranormal horror because people use light boards to identify unusual effects on a picture. So it gives brief hints to what the film involves with the pictures of a house and also a man and a woman which suggest main characters so in conclusion the title sequence gives a brief hint to what the film involves.

Devil Title Sequence

This title sequence is similar to the others in a way in which It suggests what the film is about for example in the title name it has an elevator button and there are five drawings of people with devil horns flickering across each one suggesting that these people are in a lift and no one knows who the devil is. This film also presents the names of company's helped in production and distribution.

Introduction to Blog

This blog will involve a range of things on the subject of film. This will be a built portfolio of work and films from college and other pieces of work. Also, there will be a few short film which I have produced along with other work while in the mean time will be a range of pre-planning, research e.t.c. Additionally I will include a range of reviews of recent films and television series I watch to keep me in an analytical frame of mind in film. To conclude this will be a blog to take along with me to whichever university I get accepted into to show my skills and to produce a portfolio to them if needed to.
